KARLO MARKO ALTOMONTE

(updated 2009)

Born on September 20, 1973, Karlo Marko Altomonte was first introduced to theater in 1984 in his mother, Gigi Dueñas’ Workshop for Creative Survival, a series of workshops designed for underprivileged children from various communities in Metro Manila. Four years later, in 1988, he auditioned for and was cast in the play “Francisco Maniago” directed by Nonon Padilla and produced by Tanghalang Pilipino at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He eventually ventured into stage management and was the Stage Manager for the Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Tonyo, Pepe at Pule” in 1990 which eventually went on a month-long national tour.

In 1991, he was cast in Cannes Palm D’Or awardee Raymond Red’s “Bayani.” This was followed by “Sakay” two years later also by the same director, where he played the role of “Francisco Carreon.”

In 1995, he founded a theater company, Open Space, which has since been based in Baguio City where the group stages its productions in various forms of expression.

  1. Hi Karlo.

I was searching for a community theater in Baguio and found an article in Baguio Midland Courier:
    http://www.baguiomidlandcourier.com.ph/baguio12_article.asp?mode=baguio_day2012/supplements/riopay.txt
regarding your theater group Open Space.

I just want to ask if your group is still active at the moment? The reason I ask is because I have been searching for one for quite a few months now. I'm interested in joining your group if you do accept auditions. I have some theater experience in Manila and since transferring to Baguio two and a half years ago I have been longing to get back into the theater scene.

Hope this is not intrusive or anything. If you are not looking for new members at the moment then thank you for your time. You may reach me at delatorre.maryanne@gmail.com or on my Facebook Page:

Thank you so much! Hope you are having a wonderful afternoon.

    Regards,

    Marya :)

  2. Hi Marya,

While Open Space hasn't staged a play in a while, it is very much alive and active. In the meantime, you can keep in touch with us here: https://www.facebook.com/openspace.productions/

    1. You're right. When we first staged these monologues under Tanghalang Pilipino at the CCP in 1990, there were three: Tonyo (by Rene Villanueva), Pepe (Malou Jacob) at Pule (Paul Dumol). I was that production's stage manager then. But When I decided to direct my own staging years later, I wanted to focus on just the two characters: Antonio Luna and Jose Rizal. I have also staged Pepe on its own.

I'm not sure if Rene Villanueva (RIP) ever published Tonyo, but Malou Jacob's Pepe is in her collection of plays, Teatro Politikal.
